Tucked away in the heart of the Scottish countryside, on the outskirts of the picturesque village of Kippen, Broich House is a hidden gem that offers a serene and secluded retreat for those seeking a luxurious escape from the city.
Combining contemporary luxury with the glamour of days gone by, it’s set in the picturesque grounds of a sprawling 450-acre country estate and welcomes couples, families and solo travellers alike who come to switch off from the stresses and strains of modern life and spend an indulgent few days immersed in lavish surroundings and enjoying decadent cuisine and impeccable service.
And, just a short drive away from Edinburgh, Glasgow, Gleneagles and Loch Lomond, it might feel like a world away from the hustle and bustle of the city, but despite its tranquil setting, it’s easily accessible, whether for a quick weekend away or a longer mid-week stay.
Steeped in rich history
The original Georgian House stands in the grounds of an old monastic sanctuary said to be linked to Inchmahome Priory on the island Inchmahome in the nearby Lake of Menteith. Originally called Broich House, the Victorians changed its name to Arngomery before it reverted to its original name in 1990.
Today, the house is owned by Sir James Hutchison, the third baronet of Rossie, and it has been occupied by his family for over 100 years. Sir James’ maternal great-grandfather, Archibald Colville, was once the man at the helm of David Colville & Sons, the largest steel works in Scotland, with his wife, Jean, said to be the first person to host cocktail parties in Scotland.
During the 1920’s Fortnum & Mason were commissioned to entertain the guests in style, with the high-end department store’s carriage sent on the overnight train from London to Scotland, to Stirling Station, before moving onwards to Broich House for the evening’s glamorous entertainment.
Tradition meets modern comfort
Broich House is a veritable masterpiece of traditional Scottish architecture, exuding charm and elegance at every turn. Its classic exterior and beautifully designed interior seamlessly blend period features with modern luxury, with each room designed to reflect the house’s rich heritage whilst prioritising comfort and convenience.
The property features seven beautifully designed bedrooms sleeping up to 14 guests, making it the perfect choice for a sophisticated group getaway with family or friends, or for hosting a special celebration or corporate retreat – so if you’re looking for a show-stopping venue for an event that will never be forgotten, then this is it.
Perfect for groups, events and gatherings
On that note, as well as the privacy of its seven generously sized rooms, which come kitted out with plush beds and luxurious linens to ensure a restful night’s sleep, there is ample space to convene as a group for a family reunion, celebration, or simply a cosy evening in.
For mealtimes, the Victorian dining room table is large enough to seat a full house of guests at once, and the kitchen has all you need to cook up a storm together before you sit down to feast together. In 2022, the house also gained an outdoor kitchen that’s ideal for cooking if you’re planning on dining al fresco in the outdoor dining area during the spring and summer months, too.
For a quieter evening in, there’s also a magnificent drawing room and a warm, inviting library where you can enjoy a glass of wine by the log fire or peruse the numerous shelves of leather-bound book
Leisure-wise, there’s a spacious hot tub which enjoys an idyllic setting in the Victorian walled garden where you can relax, unwind and soak away the stresses and strains of life in a secluded spot – and there’s even an outdoor shower for use afterwards. If you prefer to keep active, then Broich House also offers a table tennis table, which can be found back inside in the games room, and of course, there are plenty of wonderful walks to indulge in around the estate and nearby.
A secluded escape
Broich House is truly the epitome of a secluded retreat, and is nestled amidst rolling hills, lush greenery, and expansive grounds. The property’s extensive private estate ensures that guests can rest easy in complete privacy, whether at the house itself or strolling its beautiful landscaped gardens, and fully immerse themselves in the natural beauty of the Scottish countryside.
Despite its seclusion, the house is located just a short walk from the charming village of Kippen and its quaint businesses, which include two cosy local pubs with their own lovely gardens with stunning views of the surrounding landscapes that offer the perfect spot for a tasty meal or a quiet drink.
There’s also a small shop with a post office, along with a butcher and delicatessen where you can stock up on some delicious fresh local produce, a taste of local life and a chance to enjoy some traditional Scottish hospitality.
For those who prefer the convenience of a larger supermarket, there’s a Waitrose just a 15-minute drive away where you can stock up on all the essentials without having to venture far.
Close to major attractions
While Broich House feels wonderfully remote, its strategic position near some of Scotland’s most popular tourist destinations make it a great spot for an extended stay and from which to explore all the region has to offer. The historic city of Stirling, with its iconic castle and rich heritage, is just a short drive away and offers the chance to step back in time to Scotland’s storied past, from the Battle of Bannockburn to the life of Mary, Queen of Scots. The city’s old town is steeped in medieval history and getting lost in its maze of cobbled streets and historic buildings is one of the best ways to spend a leisurely afternoon when you’ve got nowhere to go and nowhere to be at any particular time.
There’s no shortage of natural beauty and spectacular landscapes in the surrounding areas either, with Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park, which are both just a stone’s throw from the estate, offering scenic walking and cycling routes and opportunities for boating and fishing.
The park’s stunning landscapes, with its lochs, forests, and mountains, provide the perfect backdrop for outdoor pursuits, all within easy reach of Broich House.
If you’re from outside of Scotland then it would be almost rude to visit without sampling some of the national drink, and with several whisky distilleries located within a short drive from the estate, tasting some of the finest whiskies in the world and learning all about how they are made is a must.
The world-renowned Gleneagles resort is also nearby, offering championship courses and luxurious spa facilities.
The bottom line
Combining the best of Scotland’s natural beauty, rich history, and modern luxury, Broich House offers a one-of-a-kind break that goes far beyond simply being a place to stay. Whether you’re seeking a romantic getaway, a family holiday, or a venue for a special occasion, it ticks all of the right boxes and promises a memorable experience all round.
