At the mouth of the Coghinas river, in Valledoria, where the small church of San Pietro a Mare stands, the latest discoveries reveal that this is the site where the city of Ampurias stood with the ancient cathedral of the diocese, the river and maritime center, which was an active commercial port from the Punic era until 1300.
Many studies and hypotheses from the past have now become proven theses and we will continue to dig into the search for the origins so that Valledoria can reclaim, enhance and make accessible this extraordinary artistic, historical, cultural and religious heritage that for years has been submerged in silence.
Results of the archaeological excavations still in progress with the Diocese and the Superintendency of Sassari and Nuoro.
The “Progetto Ampurias” conference, part of the “European Heritage Days on the Move”, has certified the strategic importance of this portion of territory, in Sardinia and the Mediterranean, for over two thousand years.
